Technology-facilitated harassment and stalking (TFHS) often involves the use of digital tools and platforms that make behavior harder to detect, document, or address. This may include hidden apps or disguised platforms, disappearing or auto-delete messages, private messaging systems, group chats, and encrypted communication. In many cases, activity is intentionally structured to limit visibility to others. Messages and conversations may automatically delete after being viewed, making them difficult or impossible to recover. As a result, harmful behavior may leave little visible evidence unless it is documented early. Some platforms also notify users when screenshots are taken, which can discourage individuals from capturing evidence. It is important to understand that screenshots are only one method of documentation, and awareness and safety planning are critical. Much of this activity occurs through direct messages, private servers, and group chats, where coordinated behavior can develop outside of public view. Fake accounts and anonymous profiles may be used to monitor individuals, impersonate others, spread false information, or participate in coordinated targeting. Even when content is deleted, it may still exist in other forms. Screenshots may have been taken, copies may have been saved, and information may have already been shared. The internet rarely forgets.
